A tooth extraction can be a necessary step to maintain oral health. We provide teeth extraction (including wisdom teeth) for the communities at Canley Heights, Canley Vale, Cabramatta, Liverpool and surrounding areas.
Why might you need a tooth extraction?
When dental damage such as decay is too extensive for a tooth to be repaired with a filling or crown, an extraction may be needed.
Some people have extra teeth that need to come out to ensure the rest of their teeth stay properly aligned. A baby tooth that doesn’t fall out in time to let the permanent tooth grow in may need to be extracted.
Impacted teeth are another common reason for extraction. Teeth become impacted when they get stuck in the bone or gum tissue, often because teeth are overcrowded or a tooth tilts sideways rather than growing straight up. When impacted teeth are painful or pushing against other teeth in your mouth, it’s time to have them removed.
At Advance Dental Canley Heights, you can trust our team to provide the best dental care, guidance, and answers to all of your questions.
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth can be problematic for many patients and may need to be removed to prevent pain, decay, swelling and damage to other teeth.
One of our most frequently asked questions is if the wisdom teeth removal procedure is painful. If you are concerned about pain during wisdom tooth extraction, we offer sedation methods to ensure you feel comfortable and relaxed during the extraction process.
Duration: Wisdom tooth extraction takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour, however this varies depending on the number of teeth that need to be extracted and your individual needs. Upper wisdom teeth are generally easier to remove, as they’re located in softer upper-jaw tissue. Lower wisdom teeth require a little more time, as the bone is denser.
Wisdom teeth are the third molars and are usually the last four to emerge. This often happens between 16 and 25 years of age, although this may vary for some people. About 4 out of 5 patients have their wisdom teeth removed, so it is a very common procedure. We recommend that you make an appointment every 6 months for your regular check-ups and clean, where we will also monitor the growth of your wisdom teeth and any impact it has on the rest of your teeth.
Typically in the teens, dentists begin monitoring wisdom teeth to determine if they are emerging well or are likely to cause problems in the future. With the help of X-rays, they can identify if the molars have partially erupted or if they are impacted under the gums. They also evaluate the shape of the mouth and the position of teeth. If needed, they will determine if one, two or all wisdom teeth need to be extracted or if there will be no problem.
The recovery time after wisdom teeth removal can vary from person to person and depends on several factors, such as the number of teeth removed and the complexity of the extraction. On average, most people take about 3 to 7 days to recover from wisdom teeth removal, but it can take up to 2 weeks for some.
You will need to consume soft, easy to chew food initially. We will provide a full aftercare guide.
The cost of a tooth extraction can start from $200, depending on the your individual circumstances and the difficulty of the procedure. If there is more surgical involvement required (and so more time and tools required), this increases the costs of the procedure. As our dentists are very experienced, they are able to minimise the amount of surgery needed in most cases and in order to keep the costs down for you. Come in for a consultation and we can give you an accurate quote and assessment of the wisdom teeth!
Most health funds provide cover for tooth extraction.
